Tarpon Fishing | Key West, Florida Keys Report

Tarpon Fishing? Still? In August?

August Tarpon Are A Surprise To Most But Not To the Guides At Dream Catcher Charters. We Love This Time OF The Year.

In Key West we are having a late tarpon season with some nice fish still pushing through and more residents that what we have seen in the past. This is offering our inshore fishing clients here at Dream Catcher Charters the chance to catch a nice tarpon without the hassle of too many boats all over the place.Key West has been long kept a secret as a year round tarpon fishing destination, Well, it looks like the secret is out.

Typically August is when we start to push into the baby tarpon season on the flats, up next to the mangroves and in the shallow channels. These fish respond very well to a nicely presented fly or light bait from a spinning rod. I prefer a D.O.A. shrimp  for spin fishing on 30 lb leader with 15lb braid. On fly the trusty floating shrimp patterns work really well.

August through Novemer is without a doubt the best time of the year for flats fishing for any of the Key West Slam. Tarpon, permit and bonefish are well within reach for any anglers wishing to target them. Avoid the crowds and the in season hotel rates, take advantage of the “real” Florida Keys and Key West.
