Reef Bite Is Awesome – Blue Water Slows But Still Good

Yellowtail snapper reef bite

June 19 2014 – The dog days of summer are here and its getting HOT. With that we get perfect weather with flat calm days and light winds, good thing for getting out to the reef and enjoying some awesome Florida Keys offshore fishing.

The Reef bite has been super strong through the full moon even during the day up and down the island chain. Large yellowtail snappers, mutton snapper and some grouper have been reported from Key Largo to Key West. Early summer is the time that many of our snapper species spawn so its no guess why there are so many larger fish around. Its a great way for a fast filet on the reef after a long day of trolling or making it big in the blue water.

Deep Sea blue water bite has been pretty good in the upper Keys near Islamorada and Key Largo but stating to go into the summer pattern in Key West where the fish get smaller and farther away. The last few weeks in Key West have been EPIC with big dolphin and wahoo with occasional marlin both whites and blues. The upper Keys holds a better summer fishery for blue water species such as dolphin with larger fish closer to shore. This is because the Gulf Stream comes to a smaller width as it bends around the South end of the state.

Into the month plan on excellent upper Keys dolphin fishing offshore from Marathon to Key Largo with an excellent reef bite all the way through the Keys down past Key West out to the Marquesas and the Dry Tortugas. This is an EXCELLENT time of the year to plan a trip to come to the Florida Keys and fish reef and blue water as the weather is perfect and the fishing is great.
