July 28th 2016 – The reef fishing bite has been the talk of the islands lately. Seems like everywhere I go everyone is talking about the snappers eating the bottom out of the boats. Thats pretty typical this time of the year with the way things go, actually thats a lie, we ALWAYS have great snapper fishing, thats what makes the Florida Keys such an awesome place to fish.

The mangrove snappers are the star of the show this week with some monster fish being caught in as shallow as 30ft of water from Islamorada all the way past Key West and the Marquesas Keys. To me, a monster mangrove snapper is any fish over 3 lbs. We have some mangrove snappers reported of up to 7 and 8 lbs.. NICE! The other dark meat.. YUM! Most of these larger fish are being caught on live baits and some artificial lures oh and lets not forget about our spear fishermen, they are getting in on the mangrove snapper action too.

Mutton To It is right! The mutton snapper bite is also very good. I personally like to hit these guys on the shallower reefs while they are following the bait runs across the tops. The bait is getting blasted by mackerel and showed to bite sized pieces then the muttons come up and finish off the rest. A great place to offer a nice artificial lure or live bait. We are catching muttons up to 10lbs this way and really sizing up the kill box with some tasty meat and having a blast doing it on light tackle.
