Mutton Snapper on the reef of the Florida Keys

June 26th 2015 – The Florida Keys reef fishing report is full of fair weather and great fishing. Full moon coming up will turn on the bite of a few species..

Look to the reef for some amazing food fish action in the form of grouper and snapper. With the massive amounts of bait on the reef there is an unlimited food supply for all the critters that live below the bait. Its like a natural chum source. Ballyhoo are the shrimp of the reef line. Everyone eats them and they get crushed constantly. If you are a ballyhoo on the Florida Keys reef line, its not If you going to get eaten but WHEN..

This time of the year the reef is super clear water. I like to try and fish it with the out going tide as the grass is lighter. The bait schools will be over good reef line and the fish below will be feasting. The mutton snapper follow the bait like the pied piper.

The patch reefs are loaded with willing red and black grouper. Willing to eat that is. Jigging and live baiting for them has been red hot since the opening of the Atlantic Grouper season. Patch reefs offer a little more banged up (dirty) water than the outer reef allowing us to fool the fish easier when dropping baits on them.

The full moon will bring on the snapper bite. The mangrove snappers are scheduled to spawn this months full moon, just in a few days from this writing.

its pretty easy this summer to get out to the reef for some nice catching of dinner filets. Save yourself some money and get with our bay boat fishing guides. Nice boats that handle the water really well. we have reef fishing trips starting at $450.00 for 2 persons.
