Its Time For Flats Fishing

Bonefish Release

Bonefish being released in Key West. This year bone fishing Key West has been amazing.

August 16th 2015 – One of my favorite subjects and definitely my favorite time of the year. Late summer and fall flats fishing in the Florida Keys and Key West. Flats fishing was practically invented here in the Florida Keys and we continue the tradition every day of the year. Fishing the shallows in the backcountry on the flats for sight fishing opportunities and trophy fish that live and forage on the flats.

There are many ingredients that come together this time of the year for me to say its my favorite. Mostly its the crowds. This time of the year I can get on the flats and have pretty much any of the water I want to make my day a great one poling for bonefish, tarpon and permit for the short list. This time of the year is what I call the Slam season. Its a perfect time of the year for a chance to catch a grand slam on the flats consisting of all three here out of Key West. Many of my anglers chose this time of the year to come to Key West because the room rates are lower and the crowds downtown are slim. Through September it will remain hot but October is when the weather gets perfect and the fishing remains amazing.

Permit Flats Fishing

Permit Caught In Key West On The Flats

The upper Keys like Key Largo and Islamorada also experience fewer crowds and great fishing. Finding a place to stay last minute is easier for the late planners and the flats fishing, just like Key West is amazing. The upper Florida Keys flats fishing holds bonefish, snook, and redfish. Some of the fishing guides will take you to Flamingo where the tarpon are still around and ready to eat. Thats amazing old Florida fishing there.

Weather you want to fish the upper or lower Florida Keys you really cannot go wrong with flats or backcountry fishing.  Clam pristine clear waters and just a nice day of fishing. Leave the stress and noise behind and glide along the shallows looking for a fish to harass. Flats fishing and backcountry fishing guides schedules are amazingly pretty light this time of the year as many of our anglers kids go back to school, football season starts and everyone is kind of pointed at Christmas already so it can be hard to get away. But, if you can.. its an amazing time to be here in the Florida Keys Fishing the Flats.
