June 13th 2016 – The weather here in the Florida Keys and Key West has turned very “summer”. One of my favorite summer time activities is Permit Fishing. A good tide, a full cooler of water and ice with some great clear skies and I am in heaven working the flats for the holy grail of flats fishing – The permit.

For flats fishing anglers of the Florida Keys and Key West The tailing permit is probably the most sought after or dreamt about fish to catch. The summer time here in Key West is the time to catch your permit on the flats. Permit spawn in the later part of April and come back to the flats by May but are in full force on the flats foraging and feeding June, July, August, September, October and on the nicer days in November. Some of my best days of permit fishing have been in July where 3-6 tailing fish have been caught regularly from the flats with my anglers.

Flats Fishing Skiff

My Flats fishing Skiff. Great for one angler but able to carry two.

A traditional way to fish for permit is on a flats fishing skiff much like the one I have shown here (thats my skiff). In the shallows opportunities arise on the edges and on the flats with fish cruising pushing a wake in front of them as they pass through an area or flat out digging up a crab in the shallows using their tails as weight out of the water to help dig their lower jaw into the sand and scoop up a crab or shrimp that is evading capture. This is called “tailing”. I have seen permit tailing so hard their whole tail looks like a big flag being waved back and forth saying “HEY. Im over here trying to eat a crab”…. Sliding my skiff in at this moment and watching my angler slice the air with his cast presenting the bait or fly to the fish as he is feeding is EPIC! Once it all comes together I feel as though sometimes the moment of disbelief that the connection has actually happened is overwhelming and over shadows the fight of these super strong fish.
