Sailfish, Blackfin Tunas and Kingfish Upper Florida Keys Fishing Report

December 27 2021 – Seasonal weather? No, not really. December can go either way. Can be really snotty or Very nice. None the less Sailfish, Blackfin Tunas and Kingfish are the talk of the Upper Florida Keys fishing this week. Fishing seasons have different fish species, this is our winter Season.

Fishing Report

Getting out is the easy part this week with this weather. Add great fishing to the mix and you get a very rare combination of nice weather AND great fishing this past Christmas week here in the Florida Keys deep sea fishing.

Massive amounts of bait are up on the reef which can complicate the bite. However If you have live bait or a really well rigged trolling ballyhoo its your game on the reef for Sailfish. Mix in the occasional kingfish and you have a great sport fishing mix. Venture a little further out past the reef and the blackfin tunas have been popping. Many of our Florida Keys fishing guides have been able to put their peeps on some real quality fish this last week in fishing.

Blackfin Tuna
Blackfin Tuna is delicious.

Like we mentioned above the sails will eat a well rigged trolled ballyhoo. But they love live bait. Stop and get some then hang them over the edge of the reef for a shot at a great trophy spindlebeak (sailfish). Best bet for kingfish is a live blue runner on light tackle.. Trolling baits will work as well with a red witch or pink witch down on the down rigger or planner.

Fishing Forecast

We are expecting great weather through the period into Monday the 3rd of January. Then, a small cold front will push on through for Tuesday making a strong North wind by Wednesday. we think this will enhance the outlook for a great shot at some sailfish and bump the blackfin tuna option with a little change up in the weather. Do not forget about the new moon for wahoo coming up on Sunday the 2nd for the shot at a hungry wahoo, a very popular choice for Key West deep sea fishing.
