January 13 2016 – The weather has finally turned “winter” here in Key West and we are having lots of fun fishing the Key West backcountry waters even in the higher winds.

Backcountry fishing Key West is where its at for anglers that just want to get out and have a nice day of fishing – oh – and catching. More and more people are becoming aware of the potential that lies “out back”. A completely sustainable resource fishing that offers anglers of all skill levels, age, sportsmanship and boating ability to get on the water, bend a rod and have fun!.

Fishing out of Key West with Dream Catcher Charters in the backcountry has rewarded our angles with many great catches and some lasting memories. This week backcountry fishing we have been getting into some of the biggest lady fish we have seen this year yet. Approaching over 4 lbs these fish fight like baby tarpon, are easy to hook up, jump like a ping pong ball and really fight to the finish. Pompano are showing up in the Key West backcountry as well. A great tasty white meat that makes a nice sandwich. For the fight and release we have some jacks that will take many anglers to the mat on light tackle. Ranging in size from 3 – 17lbs. these guys, pound for pound are the hardest fighting salt water fish there is. Round that out with some speckled sea trout up to 30″, snappers up to 20″ and barracudas ready to eat anything and you have your self a really fun, easy to get to day of fishing. And thats just the front lines..

As we get into more detailed species the Key West shark fishing has been very good this week in the cooler temps. Black tip sharks (spinners) are eating just about everything. Set up on a flat with one of our Key West Shark Fishing guides and have a real shot at a HUGE bull shark or Lemon shark. After sight fishing for sharks the movie Jaws will be a whole new thing.

Check Out this video of a Bull Shark up on the flats right behind my boat.

Warming trends also bring us some serious sport fish. Check out my Key West tarpon fishing report to keep up on what we are seeing out there from day to day.

January is a great month for all of Key West fishing.
February might even be better depending on how cool it gets.
You should try backcountry fishing if you like to have fun, catch fish, save some money and not get beat up.
