Florida Keys Fishing Report – Tarpon Update

Florida Keys Fishing has lived up to tradition this past week.. EPIC!!!

From the shallowest flats to the deep sea waters offshore.
Our fishing has been off the rail.

With normal weather conditions finally we have been able to offer our fishing clients very good days both inshore and offshore. This is the time of the year we can make it happen with full schedules and happy clients catching lots of fish and doing what we all do best.. Go Fishing…

Lets start with Inshore…

Fly Fishing for tarpon

Angler jumps a nice tarpon using a fly rod with Capt. Kyle Kelso of Dream Catcher Charters.

Flats Fishing – Up and down the FLorida Keys most of the flats fishing has been focused on the migrating tarpon. Fly fishermen are coming from all around the world in the hopes of getting a shot at one of these silver beasts on a fly rod or spinning rod. The tarpon are pushed up into the backcountry and trailing along the ocean facing beaches in 2 – 6 ft of water. Many fishing guides are reporting no shortage of fish (or guys chasing them). The tarpon are eating pretty well IF they are not beat up to bad.

Elsewhere on the flats we have started to get into some bonefish and permit down in Key West. The upper keys are reporting a huge number of Snook being caught. Not big fish but Snook none the less.

Backcountry Fishing – Tarpon again.. our backcountry fishing boats are taking folks out two times a day to chase the silver king. Bamboo charters out of Islamorada is reporting nice sized fish eating live baits early in the morning and late in the evening. Dream Catcher Charters of Key West is reporting a great tarpon bite all day but the winds are coming up this week to make things tough.

The guys at Dream Catcher Charters also spent some quality time in the Marquesas Keys. Capt. Kyle Kelso and Capt Steven Lamp ran a few trips out there and got into the permit pretty well. Lots of  break offs on the wrecks. Also the plug fishing in the shallow patch reefs for grouper was epic! Check out The Key West Fishing Report for more details and some photos.

Deep Sea Fishing – The blue water bite has been awesome up and down the Keys.. The fishing boats and captains have been so busy I have had a hard time trying to get with them to see what the reports are.. I checked in with the Double Down out of Key West with Capt. Brice Barr and he said catching nice sized dolphin this week has been super easy. Fish up to 30 lbs and not such a long run have been the story across the board. Also some wahoo and tunas to mix up the bag.

black fin tuna fishing

Wrecks and Reefs – Its Grouper season folks.. The Patch reefs are holding a nice group of fish this time of the year and giving them up easily to a live bait or jig. Yellowtail snappers have shown up in strong numbers on the reefs with the bite being best from 50 – 80 ft early in the morning. The mutton snappers are starting to stage up for the spawn so expect huge numbers of these fish all around certain areas of the reefs. Also expect lots of people fishing them as they are super easy to catch…
