Spring Time In The Florida Keys

Rob Harris

Capt. Rob Harris Director Key West Fishing Tournament

Now that we’ve entered the “Spring Fishing Season” in the Florida Keys, everyone wants to know what it’s all about. It’s hard enough to imagine an Island Paradise being associated with any kind of season, aside from “Tourist Season” that is. Down here in the Keys, we do have actual “Seasons” and they do also tie into what Mainlanders consider to be their weather seasons. Spring may actually be the most popular “Season” in the Florida Keys for most anglers.

Don’t forget- The Key West Fishing Tournament is kicked off and on its way. Anyone can participate. Fish one day or fish 40 days. Click here find out more.

The winds of “Spring” may be unpredictable at times, but the species we can expect aren’t. Being part of an island chain has its advantages when it comes to wind. It’s safe to say that regardless of what the winds may bring, there is always something to catch and stay out of the wind. Backcountry fishing and the bridges throughout the Keys will always offer excellent catching opportunities and a variety of species to catch, while you tuck in and escape the wind.

We started seeing the Tarpon, Permit and Bonefish in good numbers for March, which means you can expect a stellar April in that fishery. If you find yourself plying Read more »

Florida Keys Fishing In The Wind

Florida Keys Fishing Is ON!

Windy? Hell Yea…! Its howling.. 30+ out of the East. Give the Ides of March some value. Oh mY goodness. I swear it is 1-2 ft in my coffee cup..

Are we still fishing??? HELL YEA!!!! Its Going OFF!!! EPIC tarpon bite reported here. EPIC permit conditions on the flats (be fast).. And.. can you say bonefish….

Can you Say KEY WEST? Oh yea.. The little island city with a drinking problem is capturing all the attention right now with stellar fishing activity and an amazing bite.

INSHORE is the game. with Tarpon permit and bonefish. The tarpon are not on the flats but in the channels eating live bait and going nuts.. A four hour trip today reaped my anglers 4 fish out of 5 hook ups. We also saw some nice permit on the flats, but tarpon was our focus. With 74 degree water temps and warmer in the rips the bones are also making an early spring debut with some 7 pounders caught out of Key West yesterday in the wind.

Water quality is good. clear enough for sight fishing if you are a fast cast. Have fun and get out there. I am guessing it will be like this right on through the end of the week .. Windy with some great fishing.

Call my office to book a day of fishing here in Key West. 305 292 7212. We handle fishing charters from Key Largo to Key West including Islamorada and Marathon.

See you out there.. LETS GO!!!

Tarpon Fishing Report Florida Keys March 7th

The Ides of March have shown up and its a bit blustery out there. Winds from 25-35 mph are pushing across the waters of the Florida Keys and making for tough conditions.

Get with one of our professional tarpon fishing guides by going to this link. http://www.fishingfloridakeys.com/tarpon-fishing.htm

The tarpon bite has slowed a bit. I am not sure if it is from the lack of people actually going out to brave these gusty winds or the fish are put down for a number of possible reasons.

GOOD NEWS>. the weather service has stated that we will be looking at 15-20 for the rest of the week starting thursday and coming down more from there. A welcome reprieve and a great window for you tarpon anglers looking for a shot at the Silver King.

FULL MOON>. Keep in mind during the full moon the morning bite will be slow unless there was massive cloud cover from the night before. At night during the full moon the tarpon can find and eat all night long and in the morning its like force feeding a passed out drunken sailor to get them to eat. So plan accordingly.. Book your tarpon trips for the evening or late afternoon for the best results.

The fishing guides in www.fishingfloridakeys.com are always ready to take you out to the tarpon. Check them out at http://www.fishingfloridakeys.com/tarpon-fishing.htm

Tarpon Season Report March 3 2012

Hey Gang,

The tarpon are in Key West if you were wondering.. We have been covered up with them for a few weeks now. Slob Gulf of Mexico fish have been showing up.

Fishing live bait is the best bet for these channel fish. The chumming boats are doing well too offering the fish a constant and steady feed of chum. On our 4 and 6 hour trips lately we have been averaging 4 hook ups with 2 landings. These fish are huge by Key West standards ranging in size from 60 – 160 lbs.  Read more »

Destination Based Fishing Trips

Have you ever wondered how it is that some people always have a knack for planning successful fishing trips AWAY from their home fishing grounds? We all know that certain “someone” that will talk about their plans for going “somewhere” to catch a specific species. After they’ve taken that destination fishing trip we all sit around listening to the stories about how that trip went. More often than not we get to see the pictures of just how successful that trip was and wish we had the time in our busy schedules to have made that trip with our buddies.

Given the diversity of the Lower Keys fisheries, it’s safe to say that there is always “something” to plan on catching regardless of the time of year. We’ve got “something” for everyone. Backcountry anglers can target Bonefish, Tarpon, and Permit almost year-round. For those that like to bottom or wreck fish we’ve got more areas than anywhere else. Deep-sea or Blue Water anglers, we’ve got Marlin, Sailfish, Swordfish, Dolphin, Tuna and Wahoo a short ride from the dock. In all of these fisheries you don’t need to venture any farther than 20 miles from the dock. As a matter of fact, you can actually fish ALL of these fisheries in a single day and still make it back for Happy Hour! Read more »
